Challenge Courses
Challenge Courses are timed race activities that the player can complete around Friendship Island. When completing a Challenge Course,
Athlete Coins or
Obstacle Course Rings will appear and the player must collect all of them in order to complete the challenge. Upon completion, the player can win Trophy Pieces (if they have not yet won the pieces from the course) and additional currency.
Achievements
Achievements related to Challenge Courses only require beating the Bronze time for courses. Related achievements include:
Challenge Courses: Goals for completing each of the Friendship Island courses.
Explorer Goals: Goals for completing all courses in each of the Friendship Island regions.
City Town Challenge Courses: Goals for completing each of the
City Town courses.
City Town Explorer: A goal for completing all of the
City Town courses.
Completing Courses
To start a Challenge Course, a player has to step on the button at the start, which causes
Athlete Coins or
Obstacle Course Rings to appear. Challenge Courses are completed by collecting every
Athlete Coin or passing through every
Obstacle Course Ring for the course within a given time limit.
The time limit for the entire timer bar is the Bronze time. The bar starts at Gold, changes to the Silver at the first mark on the right, and then changes to Bronze at the next mark. Finishing within the Gold time limit generally requires having Companion Abilities and/or Potions active to complete successfully. A
Multiplayer friend helping can also be very useful.
The appearance of the course starting button changes depending on whether a course has been previously completed or not.
- Most regions have their buttons marked with a flagpole, and the pole gets a flag the color of the highest difficulty level completed. A gold flag will also be marked with a white circle with a gold flower in the center.
- Certain regions instead have arches over the starting button, and the arch will be lined in the color of the highest difficulty completed. A gold arch will also have a gold star at the top.
Prizes
Completing a Challenge Course rewards three different Trophy Pieces: a Bronze, Silver, or Gold Trophy Piece for beating the Bronze, Silver, or Gold times for the first time at that difficulty. Every Challenge Course can only reward each type of trophy piece once. To craft a Trophy from the Trophy Pieces, the player must complete all courses in a single region. The player will get the
Trophy Crafting Plans for a trophy made from the Trophy Pieces the first time they win the related type of Trophy Piece.
The player can continue to redo the Challenge Course even after winning all Trophy Pieces. It is possible to win all Trophy Pieces in a single run if the player wins Gold the first time they challenge the course. Courses also always reward
Sparkles, with +1 for each level of difficulty completed (a total of 3x
Sparkles for Gold).
Tips for Completing
Many of the Challenge Courses listed here are most easily completed with Companion Abilities and/or Potions.
Pompompurin's Slow & Steady ability gives 5 extra seconds (on top of the normal maximum) to complete courses with. This may not sound like much, but 5 seconds makes a significant difference when challenging Gold Times. Additionally, his Pudding Pants ability boosts your jumps. This is particularly useful when challenging courses with many hills.
- The Pudding Pants ability is known to interact poorly with air vents, such as those in certain Cloud Island Challenge Courses.
Hangyodon's Speed Swimmer ability, especially at 100%, is fantastic for challenging courses on or in water.
Pochacco's Speed Walker ability is great for many Challenge Courses on the land. Additionally, his Relay ability lets him help complete the Challenge Course, though he cannot complete them without your help.
Pekkle's Speed Climber ability is useful if the Challenge Course requires extensive climbing.- Along with a companion ability, taking one or more Potions can also help. A Potion cannot be consumed if a companion is already providing the same buff.
Currently,
Thermal Potions,
Kuromi's Super Balloon ability, and
Pompompurin's Pudding Pants ability are known to cause issues with thermal air vents that already give an extra height boost (in
Cloud Island and
City Town), so using them on courses that require the use of those vents is not recommended.
It is possible for a player to use
Multiplayer to work with a multiplayer guest to complete a course. Both the host and guest should participate by collecting at least one
Athlete Coin or
Obstacle Course Ring each during the same run of a course. Having the second player start from the middle or end of the course can make completing courses much easier. While the guest will never receive trophy pieces, they otherwise earn the same prizes as the host.
