Fishing Rod
The Fishing Rod is a tool which allow the player to catch Fish at different locations on the island and complete certain quests. It is unlocked during the "Keep It Reel" quest.
Crafting
In order to unlock the Fishing Rod crafting recipe, the player must complete the "Keep It Reel" quest, under 
The Right Tools. In order to craft the fishing rod, the player will need the following items: 10 
Sticks, 3 
Thread, and 1 
Gizmo. The fishing rod can be crafted at any crafting table. [1]

Usage
To use the Fishing Rod, the player must select it from their toolbar. Then, the player can cast their fishing line into most watery areas, as well as into certain lava pools in the Caldera and Lava Caves. A successful cast will cause a random group of fish available during the current time of day in that particular area to spawn. When a fish bites, the player can hook it by pressing the fishing rod button, and then they should balance the tension of the rod by pressing the directional buttons.
The indicator needs to be kept in the green/yellow area of the fishing bar. If the fish pulls it all the way to the end, the fish will escape. If the indicator crosses the central white line, the fish may begin to pull hard in the other direction, but it will not escape the hook immediately.
While the fishing line is cast but before a fish is hooked, the player can choose to place an item on the 
hook as bait. This appears to make fish more likely to bite quickly, but whether certain items are more effective or not is unknown. Messing with the bait will cause the current fish interested in the rod to lose interest and be replaced by the next fish in the group.
The current fish can also be made to lose interest by hitting the fishing rod button before the fish bites. This will pull the hook back towards the player slightly and cause the fish to switch with the next in the group.
Catching a fish may also get the player an item. All fish give a specific item the first time one of their size and species is caught. Others may also give other items, such as sticks and Music Discs, when they are caught.
Badtz-maru as a companion makes it more likely that rarer fish will spawn. 
Hangyodon as a companion makes fish more likely to bite quickly.

- ↑ A glitch during the 2024 Spooky Celebration made the Fishing Rod recipe erroneously possible to purchase at Small Gift Big Smile, including in multiple quantities. For players who had crafted the Fishing Rod before the event, buying more of the crafting recipe had no effect. As of November 6, 2024, there are no known accounts on what would have happened if the player had bought the recipe and crafted a rod with it prior to starting the "Keep It Reel" quest.
