Tags are attributes that categorize items obtained in-game. Tag names are mostly unofficial, with many names based on the names of the Official Hello Kitty Island Adventure Discord's custom emoji.
Basic Mechanics
Items can have up to four tags attributed to them. Each Island Resident has three liked tags that determines what items they accept as gifts.
All Island Visitors also have a liked tag, separate from their Visitor Cabin requirements. A matching item in a satisfactory cabin will give the cabin extra heart for the visitor, up to 5 hearts, which increases the likelihood of a visitor visiting while they are available.
Most visitors also require certain amounts of items with specific tags in a cabin to make the cabin satisfactory for them.
Gift Values
Any tag with giftable items has a value called "gift value" here. The gift value for each tag reflects the tag's rarity, which is not displayed in the game.
Gift value determines how many return gifts each tag earns from an Island Resident when an item with that tag is gifted to them. It also determines how much friendship (in the form of Friendship XP) the tag earns when the item is gifted.
Liked tags earn an additional bonus that is not covered by the basic gift values listed below. Every liked tag (1 heart) earns +1 gift value, so a gift with 3 matching tags (3 hearts) would earn +3 gift value.
Different friendship levels (from Friend to Close Friend) also provide a return gift bonus that is not covered by gift values below. (At Best Friend status, gift values no longer matter, as the return gift changes to a Character Gift Box.)
See "Character Gift Guide" or "Gifting" for more information.
