Thermals will appear around the region in which there is steam in. In order to make steam form on Friendship Island, the player needs to complete the "Saunarator" quest.
Thermals with boulders on them will only appear in the following regions: 
Gemstone Mountain, 
Mount Hothead, or 
Spooky Swamp. During the steam event, there will be 5x Thermals with boulders.
When the boulder is broken using the 
Pickaxe, Thermals will produce 
Steamdrops. Occasionally, Thermals will produce 
Music Discs when broken instead of a Steamdrop. If the player was somewhere else during a weather event, the boulders will stick around until another steam event in that region occurs!
There will be other Thermals with no boulders that only produce upward drafts that can make 
Balloons rise. In 
Seaside Resort and the 
Merry Meadow, Thermals will never have boulders. Instead, the Seaside Resort will have the 
Steamy Sunfish spawn during steam, and the Merry Meadow will have the 
Hearthling spawn, respectively.
