Companion Abilities
Companion Abilities are special abilities that are unlocked as the player increases their friendship level with the Island Residents! Each Island Resident Friend has one or two unique abilities. In order to access these special abilities, the player must speak to the Island Resident and ask their Friend to follow them. This dialog option differs resident to resident.
The player can also change the Island Resident's outfit after reaching a higher friendship level.
At the start of the game, only one resident can be the player's companion (outside of certain quests) at a time. The player will unlock the ability to have two companions (instead of one) at once they've completed the "Together Forever" quest. The ability to have two companions at once is also temporarily unlocked for everyone during the "Friendship Festival" event.
Parentheses in the table below are when the characters can first become companions with the player.

Material Collection
Once the player has reached the maximum friendship level with an Island Resident (
Best Friend status), they will be able to collect materials around the island for the player in the same way as the 
Collector Hat Nul. In order to access this ability, the player must speak to the Best Friend and select the dialog option: "Can you find something for me?" or "I have a question..." and then "Can you find something for me?" dialog option.
After selecting a specific material for the resident to collect, all of that item currently present on the island will be removed from the island and will be able to be collected from the 
Collection Box the following day.
Information within this section is different for
Apple Arcade
players.
Instead of speaking to each Best Friend individually to request material collection, the player can manage Best Friend material collection in one place by speaking to the 
Island Spirit, and a menu will appear. This ability is unlocked after the player completes the "Besties, Assemble!" quest.

The player will unlock the Collection Box on completion of the "Terra Nul" quest series. Material collection is technically not a companion ability, so the Best Friend will refuse the request if they are currently busy.
Hello Kitty 
In order to have Hello Kitty as your companion, select the "Will you join me?" dialog option when speaking to her anytime after she has reached friendship level 2.
Sous Chef Ability
Hello Kitty's Sous Chef ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 2 with Hello Kitty. Take her with you if you are going to cook anything with most cooking stations: the Oven, Soda Machine, Cauldron, Espresso Machine, Dessert Machine, Pizza Oven, Candy Cloud Machine, and Egg Pan Station. She will give you a greater chance to create an additional food item when you are cooking!

Everyone's Friend Ability 
Hello Kitty's "Everyone's Friend" ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 12 with Hello Kitty. Take her with you when gifting the other Island Residents to increase friendship 10% faster!

My Melody 
In order to have My Melody as your companion, select the "Will you come with me?" dialog option when speaking to her anytime after she has reached friendship level 4.
Big Smile Ability
My Melody's Big Smile ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 4 with My Melody. Take her with you when gifting other Island Residents, and she will increase your chances of receiving one extra return gift back!

Visitor Cabins, and the cabins will cost 1 less

Chococat 
In order to have Chococat as your companion, select the "Will you come with me?" dialog option when speaking to him anytime after he has reached friendship level 5.
Master Crafter Ability 
Chococat's Master Crafter ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 5 with Chococat. Take him with you when you are crafting items, and he will make it so you'll have a chance of crafting an additional item 30% of the time! Chococat's Master Crafter ability does not work for the 
Creation Station.
Tour Guide Ability 
Chococat's Tour Guide ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 10 with Chococat. Take him with you when you are completing puzzle rooms, and he will give you hints!

Tuxedosam 
In order to have Tuxedosam as your companion, select the "Care to join me?" dialog option when speaking to him anytime after he has reached friendship level 7.
Negotiator Ability 
Tuxedosam's Negotiator ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 13 with Tuxedosam. If you take him with you when you are shopping,there will be a 25% chance to receive an extra item when trading in shops!
Fashionista Ability
Tuxedosam's Fashionista ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 7 with Tuxedosam. Take him with you for an increase to outfit powers!
(Note: As of 2.0.3 the Mermaid Outfit is the only outfit with powers.) [1]

Badtz-maru 
In order to have Badtz-maru as your companion, select the "Let's team up!" dialog option when speaking to him anytime after he has reached friendship level 5.
Gamer Ability 
Badtz-maru's Gamer ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 9 with Badtz-maru. Take him with you to allow one free Ticket use per day!
His ability does not give a 
Game Ticket item as such; instead he will tell the player "This one (i.e. the minigame) is on me." when the player talks to a 
Nul cashier.
Fish Whisperer Ability
Badtz-maru's Fish Whisperer ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 5 with Badtz-maru. Take him with you to increase the rate at which fish bite the hook!

Pochacco 
In order to have Pochacco as your companion, select the "Let's explore together!" dialog option when speaking to him anytime after he has reached friendship level 8.
Speed Walker Ability
Pochacco's Speed Walker ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 8 with Pochacco. Take him with you in order to have a faster walking speed!

Pochacco's Relay ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 14 with Pochacco. If you will take him with you while doing island challenges, he will help you complete the challenge!

Keroppi 
In order to have Keroppi as your companion, select the "Let's go explore!" dialog option when speaking to him anytime after he has reached friendship level 6.
Critter Friend Ability 
Keroppi's Critter Friend ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 9 with Keroppi. If you will take him with you are catching critters, there will be a 25% chance that critters won’t become startled or run away!
Critter Calmer Ability
Keroppi's Critter Calmer ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 6 with Keroppi. Take him with you if you are catching critters, and he will make the critters slower so it will be easier for you to catch them!

Kuromi 
In order to have Kuromi as your companion, select the "Let's hang out!" dialog option when speaking to her anytime after she has reached friendship level 9.
Super Balloon Ability 
Kuromi's Super Balloon ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 16 with Kuromi. Take her with you for a small height boost when using balloons!
Witchcraft Ability
Kuromi's Witchcraft ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 13 with Kuromi. Take her with you in order to have potion's special powers last longer!

Pekkle

Dance All Night Ability 
Pekkle's Dance All Night ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 13 with Pekkle. When having him as a companion, Pekkle will allow the player to change the time of day when they talk to him.
Speed Climber Ability
Pekkle's Speed Climber ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 7 with Pekkle. Take him with you in order to have a faster climbing speed!

Slow & Steady Ability 
Pompompurin's Slow & Steady ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 12 with Pompompurin. If you will take him with you while doing island challenges, you will be given an additional 5 seconds to complete the challenge! This also works in timed outdoor Mini Games like "Bogging for Apples" and "Rockadoodler Roundup".

Retsuko
In order to have Retsuko as your companion, select the "Let's find some scenic spots." dialog option when speaking to her anytime after she has reached friendship level 16.
Hot Stuff Ability 
Retsuko's Hot Stuff ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 19 with Retsuko. Take her with you to allow swimming in molten rock!
The game is somewhat selective as to which kinds of lava that Hot Stuff will allow swimming in and which kinds cannot. As of v2.1.0 the overworld (Mount Hothead) and Lava Caves generally allow swimming, while the Red Hot Ruins and Red Hot Rampage do not. Small lava puddles between rocks in Lava Caves also cannot be stepped into, and neither can the small puddle behind the Mount Hothead Pizza Oven.
Adrenaline Ability
Retsuko's Adrenaline ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 16 with Retsuko. Take her with you in order to recharge stamina faster

Hangyodon's Fish Friend ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 10 with Hangyodon. If you will take him with you while fishing, he will increase the chances of a rare fish appearing by 25%!
Speed Swimmer Ability
Hangyodon's Speed Swimmer ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 5 with Hangyodon. Take him with you in order to have a faster swimming and diving speed!

Wish me mell's Master Gardener ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 11 with Wish me mell. Take her with you if you are going to use the Seed Dispenser to turn flowers into seed packets for a chance at a bonus seed!

Precision Play

My Sweet Piano's Master Interior Designer ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 13 with My Sweet Piano. Take her with you if you are going to customize furniture, and she will refund a portion of the cost of furniture customization!

TOPHAT's Pickup Glitch ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 9 with TOPHAT. Take him with you when foraging for items, and he will give you a 10% chance of getting two items when picking up an item!

Big Challenges 
In order to have Big Challenges as your companion, select the "Let's have an adventure!" dialog option when speaking to him anytime after she has reached friendship level 19.
Vacuum Ability 
Big Challenges' Vacuum ability is unlocked when the player reaches friendship level 19 with Big Challenges. Take him with you when foraging for items, and items will be automatically picked up for you!
Typically only the items that are within glowing range of the player character gets picked up automatically. Additionally, the ability does not work at all in the 
Fizzy Ore minecart in Crystal Caves.

Kiki 
Kiki and his twin, Lala, require the "Together Forever" quest to become companions. Because they do not like being separated, both must become companions at the same time. In order to have them as your companions, select the "Will you join me?" dialog option when speaking to one of them.
Meteorology Ability (Kiki) 
Kiki's Meteorology ability is unlocked when the player has completed the "Together Forever" quest. When having Kiki and 
Lala as companions, the time in-between weather events will decrease by 50%.

Lala 
Lala and her twin, Kiki, require the "Together Forever" quest to become companions. Because they do not like being separated, both must become companions at the same time. In order to have them as your companions, select the "Will you join me?" dialog option when speaking to one of them.
Meteorology Ability (Lala) 
Lala's Meteorology ability is unlocked when the player has completed the "Together Forever" quest. When having Kiki and Lala as companions, the time in-between weather events will decrease by 50%.
